Al Hilal president reveals real reason behind Karim Benzema’s departure

Al Hilal president Prince Nawaf bin Saad has moved to clarify Karim Benzema’s departure from the Saudi club, insisting that the decision to terminate the French striker’s contract was based entirely on sporting considerations and not financial problems.

Benzema’s sudden exit had generated significant speculation, particularly given his high-profile status and the financial investment surrounding his arrival at the Saudi Pro League giants.

However, Prince Nawaf strongly rejected suggestions that the termination was linked to financial disagreements involving the club, the Public Investment Fund (PIF) or the Saudi Ministry of Sport.

The Al Hilal president stressed that the club’s financial affairs are properly documented, with all accounts and financial figures subject to the appropriate records and procedures.

Turning specifically to Benzema’s departure, Prince Nawaf explained that the decision was made after the club assessed the impact of a major attacking addition to the squad.

Al Hilal’s signing of England international Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa was a key factor in the situation. With Watkins arriving to compete for a place in the starting XI, Benzema’s expected playing time was set to decrease.

Rather than leaving the former Ballon d’Or winner on the bench, the club opted to discuss the situation directly with the 38-year-old forward.

According to the club’s explanation, the discussions were conducted amicably, eventually leading both parties to agree to terminate Benzema’s contract.

The decision was therefore presented as a sporting one, with Al-Hilal prioritising squad balance and tactical requirements over the reputation or status of individual players.

Prince Nawaf also expressed his appreciation for Benzema’s professionalism during his time at the club, thanking the former Real Madrid and France star for his contribution.

Benzema joined the Saudi Pro League after leaving Real Madrid and became one of the biggest names to make the move to Saudi Arabia. His arrival generated considerable attention and raised expectations that he would play a leading role for his new club.
