Chelsea suffer late collapse in Lamine Camara transfer deal

Chelsea’s proposed move for Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara collapsed unexpectedly on the final day of the transfer window, despite the clubs having reached a written agreement over the Senegal international.

Chelsea had identified Camara as their preferred replacement for Enzo Fernandez, whose transfer to Manchester City was expected to go through.

The Premier League club agreed a deal worth about £47m for Camara, with the midfielder set to sign a six-year contract containing an option to extend it by a further season.

However, Monaco ultimately refused to complete the transfer and did not sign the required documentation. The move therefore broke down in the final moments before the transfer deadline.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reported that Chelsea were angry about the way the negotiations had been handled, describing the process as “highly unprofessional”.

Camara had been one of Chelsea’s leading midfield targets as the club prepared for Fernandez’s expected departure to Manchester City. The London club had also considered alternatives including Manu Kone, Martin Zubimendi and Lucas Bergvall.

The collapse leaves Chelsea without the midfielder who appeared set to become Fernandez’s direct replacement. It also means the club must now rely on its existing midfield options following the completion of Fernandez’s record move to Manchester City.

Camara had been viewed as a strong fit for Chelsea because of his physical strength, energy and ability to carry the ball forward. His age was also considered an important advantage, giving him the potential to develop into a key player under manager Xabi Alonso.

The failure of the deal is particularly frustrating for Chelsea because what was regarded as the most difficult part of the negotiations had already been completed. The two clubs had reached agreement on the terms of the transfer, only for Monaco to stop the move from being formally concluded.

Chelsea were ultimately left without a deal after the late breakdown. Alonso will now have to work with the midfielders already at his disposal and hope they can cope with the loss of one of the team’s most important players.

The proposed transfer had been designed to provide continuity in midfield after Fernandez’s move, with Camara’s athleticism and ability to progress possession seen as qualities capable of filling the gap. Instead, the final-day collapse has left Chelsea needing to continue with their current squad.
