Portsmouth recruit dual-national left-back Jayden Meghoma in Brentford loan switch

England and Nigeria left-back Jayden Meghoma has joined Portsmouth from Brentford on loan, giving the Championship club a new option on the left side of defence.

The 20-year-old’s move began on 1 September 2026 and runs until 30 June 2027, when he is scheduled to return to Premier League side Brentford. No transfer fee has been disclosed for the loan.

Meghoma joins Portsmouth after spending the second half of the 2025-26 season on loan at Rangers. He returned to Brentford at the end of that spell before moving to Fratton Park.

The defender made one appearance in Premier League 2 during the 2026-27 campaign before his switch, starting the match and providing one assist. He has yet to feature in the Championship, Premier League or EFL Cup this season.

Born in Slough, Meghoma is eligible to represent both England and Nigeria. He is a left-footed defender who stands 1.76m tall and has played primarily as a left-back.

Meghoma joined Brentford from Southampton Under-21s in August 2024 in a €5.9m transfer. Before that, he had been part of Southampton’s development setup after leaving Tottenham’s youth system in September 2022.

His move to Portsmouth continues a succession of loan spells since joining Brentford. He spent part of the 2024-25 season with Preston before returning to the west London club, then moved to Rangers for the following campaign.

Portsmouth began the 2026-27 season in the Championship, while Brentford are competing in the Premier League. Meghoma’s temporary switch therefore takes him from England’s top division to its second tier for the remainder of the campaign.

The transfer leaves Portsmouth with the dual-national defender until the end of June 2027, when his loan agreement is due to expire and he will return to Brentford.
