Tanatswa Nyakuhwa: Newport County sign Cardiff winger on loan

Wales-Zimbabwe winger Tanatswa Nyakuhwa has joined Newport County from Cardiff on a season-long loan, completing a move between clubs from the Championship and League Two.

The 20-year-old left winger’s loan runs until 31 May 2027. No transfer fee has been given for the move.

Nyakuhwa, who was born in Newport, returns to the club after spending part of the 2025-26 season there on loan. He initially moved from Cardiff to Newport on 14 January 2026 before returning to Cardiff at the end of that campaign on 31 May.

His latest switch represents a second temporary spell with Newport and gives the club another option on the left side of attack. Nyakuhwa is naturally a left winger and favours his right foot.

He joined Cardiff’s senior setup from the club’s under-21 side in July 2025, having previously progressed through Cardiff’s youth pathway. Before moving into the under-21 group, he had been with Cardiff City’s youth ranks and Cardiff Under-18s.

Nyakuhwa’s return to Newport comes with the player contracted to Cardiff until 31 May 2027, while his current loan agreement places him at Newport for the 2026-27 season.

The move also sees him step from Cardiff’s Championship structure into a Newport side competing in League Two. His current market value is listed at €100,000, although that figure is not a transfer fee.

Nyakuhwa has represented both Welsh and Zimbabwean football through his nationality background, and his arrival adds a player familiar with Newport to the club’s attacking options. His previous loan spell at the club lasted from January to May 2026 before he went back to Cardiff for the summer.

Cardiff developed Nyakuhwa through several stages of their academy, with his progression taking him from Cardiff City’s youth setup to the under-18s, then the under-21s and senior squad. The move to Newport is the latest step in that pathway and gives him another opportunity to continue his senior career in League Two.

The loan was completed on 1 September 2026, with Nyakuhwa joining Newport County from Cardiff until 31 May 2027.
