Uganda face South Korea first in historic Under-17 World Cup group challenge

Uganda will begin their first-ever FIFA Under-17 World Cup campaign against South Korea on 19 November, with Ecuador and New Caledonia completing a demanding Group B line-up.

The Cubs secured their place at the tournament after overcoming Ghana in a dramatic penalty shoot-out. Their qualification has given Uganda a landmark opportunity, and the team will now test itself against three opponents with previous experience of the competition.

Arafat Ibanda, Owen Mukisa and a number of other emerging talents from Uganda’s football system will carry the country’s hopes during the finals. The Cubs have been drawn alongside South Korea, Ecuador and New Caledonia, with the opening two fixtures coming against the sides regarded as the strongest teams in the group.

South Korea will provide Uganda’s first opponent, before the Cubs face Ecuador in their second match. They will complete the first round against New Caledonia, potentially giving them an important opportunity to secure points against the team viewed as the most accessible obstacle in the section.

While South Korea and Ecuador begin the group stage as the favourites, Uganda will believe they have a chance of competing in the pool. Their qualification victory over Ghana, settled by penalties after an intense contest, has already marked a significant achievement for the team.

The tournament represents the first time Uganda have reached the Under-17 World Cup. The Cubs will therefore be making history when they take to the field for their opening match, while Ibanda, Mukisa and their fellow young players look to make an impression on the international stage.

Uganda’s first-round schedule is as follows:

– 19 November, 13:30: South Korea v Uganda – 22 November, 13:00: Ecuador v Uganda – 25 November, 12:30: Uganda v New Caledonia

The sequence means Uganda must start against one of the group’s leading contenders before meeting the other pre-tournament favourite three days later. Their final fixture against New Caledonia will complete the Cubs’ first World Cup group campaign.

With two of their three matches scheduled against South Korea and Ecuador, Uganda face an immediate test of their ability to compete at this level. However, their presence in the finals is already a historic moment, and the team now has the chance to build on its qualification success.

For the Cubs, the route through Group B is clear: South Korea first, Ecuador next and New Caledonia last. The challenge is considerable, but Uganda have earned the opportunity to measure themselves against established Under-17 World Cup opponents and pursue progress in their debut appearance.
