Egypt reach African Womens Volleyball Championship semi-finals on Olympic qualification path

Egypt’s women’s volleyball team have reached the semi-finals of the African Women’s Volleyball Championship in Kenya after beating Tunisia 3-0 on Tuesday.

The result keeps Egypt’s campaign on course for a place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, with the African champions set to qualify directly for the tournament.

Egypt controlled the quarter-final from the opening set and secured a 25-20 victory before extending their advantage with a 25-14 success in the second.

They maintained their authority in the third set, completing a convincing win by taking it 25-9. The result also marked a 16th consecutive victory for the Egypt women’s national volleyball team.

Their reward is a semi-final meeting with Rwanda, who stand between Egypt and a place in the final of the continental competition.

Egypt had topped Group B, which also included Uganda, Senegal and Burkina Faso. They then advanced past Burundi in the round of 16 before overcoming Tunisia in the quarter-finals.

The African Women’s Volleyball Championship is being staged in Kenya from 23 August to 5 September 2026, with 16 national teams taking part.

The tournament carries added significance because the winner will secure Africa’s direct qualification place for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. Egypt are seeking to add another continental title to a record that already includes three African Women’s Volleyball Championship triumphs.

The team’s latest win over Tunisia was built on a steady improvement across the match. After taking the first set by five points, Egypt increased the margin in the second before producing their most dominant display in the deciding set.

That performance ensured there was no late revival from Tunisia and allowed Egypt to move into the last four with a clean-sheet victory across all three sets. It also extended their winning run as they continue their pursuit of another African crown and Olympic qualification.

Egypt’s route to the semi-finals began with first place in a group containing four teams. Their progress continued in the knockout stage against Burundi, followed by the emphatic quarter-final result against Tunisia.

The semi-final against Rwanda will provide Egypt with another opportunity to maintain their unbeaten sequence and move one step closer to the title. The eventual African champions will not only lift the continental trophy but also become the continent’s representatives at Los Angeles 2028.
