Sunderland beat Arsenal to €30m Malick Fofana deal in deadline-day transfer coup

Sunderland have reached an agreement to sign Lyon winger Malick Fofana in a deal worth more than €30 million (£25.7 million) including bonuses.

The 21-year-old Belgium international has been given permission to travel for his medical after agreeing personal terms on a five-year contract with the newly promoted Premier League club.

Sunderland will also have the option to extend the deal by a further 12 months, with the transfer expected to be completed before Tuesday night’s deadline.

While the final paperwork still needs to be concluded, the deal is understood to be on track, handing Sunderland a major statement signing as they prepare for a season that will also include European football.

Arsenal interest comes to nothing

Fofana’s move to the north-east comes after Arsenal emerged as a late contender for his signature.

The Athletic reported on Monday that the Gunners were considering making a move for the winger, who had been on their radar and had held discussions with manager Mikel Arteta.

However, Sunderland have moved decisively to secure the highly rated attacker, beating competition from one of the Premier League’s leading clubs.

Fofana has attracted significant interest since establishing himself at Lyon, with Chelsea making a verbal enquiry last summer while Everton also held talks over a possible transfer.

Sunderland continue attacking rebuild

The signing represents another ambitious move from Sunderland, who are strengthening their squad ahead of a campaign that will see them compete in the Europa League.

Manager Regis Le Bris has already welcomed full-backs Thomas Meunier and Dayann Methalie, as well as midfielder Jules Ahoka, as the club continue to reshape their squad.

Attacking additions have also been a priority, with Sunderland exploring moves for Marseille forward Igor Paixao and Manchester City winger Jack Grealish.

Grealish, however, is now set to return to Everton, leaving Sunderland to focus on other targets as they look to add more firepower.

Fofana arrives with a proven record in French football. He has scored twice in six appearances for Lyon this season, finding the net in the second leg of their Champions League play-off defeat to Fenerbahce and in the opening-day Ligue 1 victory over Toulouse.

Overall, he has scored 19 goals in 83 appearances for Lyon since joining the club two-and-a-half years ago.

Belgium international on the rise

Fofana began his professional career with Gent, coming through the club’s academy before making his senior debut in July 2022.

He went on to make 64 appearances for the Belgian side, scoring five goals and providing 10 assists, before Lyon paid €17 million to sign him in January 2024.

At international level, Fofana represented Belgium through the Under-21 ranks before making his senior debut in October 2024.

He has since earned five senior caps and scored his first international goal in September’s 6-0 World Cup qualifying victory over Liechtenstein.

Despite his growing importance to Belgium, he was not included in their squad for the summer tournament.

Now, Sunderland are poised to make Fofana one of their most significant acquisitions as they prepare for a demanding campaign featuring both Premier League and Europa League football.
