Rulani Mokwena praised by Egyptian referee after perfect Pyramids start
Pyramids FC coach Rulani Mokwena has won praise in Egypt after an unusual show of appreciation for referee Hamada El Kalawi following his side’s latest victory.
The South African coach has made an impressive start to his tenure at Pyramids, winning both of his opening matches in the 2026/27 Egyptian Premier League.
Pyramids face Al Masry on Monday as they look to maintain their perfect start to the campaign.
Following Thursday’s 2-0 victory over Abou Qir Fertilizers, Mokwena took time to congratulate El Kalawi for his performance during the match.
After acknowledging the opposing bench at the final whistle, the 39-year-old walked over to the referee and praised the standard of officiating.
“Second half, the best! Zero mistakes, you were excellent. That’s why you are one of the best in Africa,” Mokwena told El Kalawi.
The exchange has attracted attention in Egyptian football circles, with footage of the interaction circulating across local media outlets.
El Kalawi appeared pleased by the gesture and responded with a warm “Thank you” to the Pyramids coach.
Mokwena’s comments have added to the positive reception surrounding his early days in Egyptian football, with the former Mamelodi Sundowns coach yet to drop points since taking charge of Pyramids.
