Sibiya watches Mofokeng shine as South African stars meet in Brussels

New Lille signing Thato Sibiya took the opportunity to watch fellow South African Relebohile Mofokeng in action in Europe, as the two players met around Royal Union Saint-Gilloise’s Brussels derby against Anderlecht.

Mofokeng’s side secured a convincing 3-0 victory over their local rivals, although the South African international began the match on the substitutes’ bench. He was introduced late in the second half, making a cameo appearance after Royal Union Saint-Gilloise had established firm control of the contest.

The derby provided an important occasion for Mofokeng and his club, but he was not the only South African presence inside the stadium. Sibiya was in the stands to support his compatriot as Royal Union Saint-Gilloise completed a comfortable win.

The pair later shared a moment together before posing with the South African flag, highlighting the growing presence of South African players in European football.

Sibiya recently moved to French club Lille on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns. The transfer was confirmed only two days before Lille faced Paris Saint-Germain last Friday, in a match that ended in a 2-2 draw.

As a result, the midfielder has yet to make his Lille debut. His arrival came shortly before a demanding fixture, with Lille drawing against Paris Saint-Germain before Sibiya had the opportunity to feature for his new club.

Sibiya will also have the chance to play in the UEFA Champions League during his time with Lille. The French side have already been drawn against high-profile opponents including Arsenal and Bayern Munich, setting up a series of difficult European matches.

Mofokeng’s schedule is also set to include challenging continental fixtures. Royal Union Saint-Gilloise will compete in the UEFA Europa League, where they are due to face Olympique Lyon, Real Sociedad and Besiktas.
