Kgaogelo Sekgota makes Petrojet debut after move to Egypt

Kgaogelo Sekgota has started a new chapter in his career after making his official debut for Egyptian Premier League club Petrojet.

The former Kaizer Chiefs winger came off the bench in the second half as Petrojet were beaten 3-2 by Talaea El Gaish. The appearance marked Sekgota’s first competitive outing since completing his move to Egypt.

Sekgota joined Petrojet after becoming a free agent following his departure from Betway Premiership side Siwelele FC. He made only eight appearances in all competitions for Siwelele before leaving the club.

The 29-year-old subsequently agreed a two-year contract with Petrojet, securing a return to football outside South Africa. His first appearance for the Egyptian club came as a substitute, with Petrojet unable to hold on for a positive result in their latest league match.

Sekgota will now be hoping the move provides greater consistency in his career. The South African winger has represented four different clubs over the past two years, making the switch to Petrojet another significant change in a relatively short period.

This is not Sekgota’s first experience of playing abroad. He previously spent time with Vitoria Setubal in Portugal and also played for Lithuanian club FC Stumbras, who ceased operations in 2019.

His latest move follows a spell with Siwelele in the Betway Premiership, where opportunities were limited. After making eight appearances for the club, Sekgota was released and became available to move on a free transfer.

Petrojet’s next fixture is against defending Egyptian champions Zamalek on Monday evening. Sekgota could be involved again as he looks to build on his first appearance and establish himself in his new team.

The winger’s debut came during a difficult opening outing for Petrojet, but the two-year agreement gives him the opportunity to settle in Egypt and seek a sustained run of football. At 29, Sekgota will be looking to make the latest stage of his career a stable one after spells with several clubs in South Africa and abroad.
