Bruno Fernandes hat-trick powers Manchester United to first Premier League win

Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick as Manchester United recovered from an early setback to beat Ipswich Town 5-2 and claim their first Premier League victory of the campaign on Sunday evening.

Manchester United had been looking to respond after suffering a shock defeat by Hull City on the opening day, but their afternoon began badly when Leif Davids finished from inside the area to put Ipswich ahead.

The visitors’ advantage lasted until five minutes before half-time, when Fernandes took advantage of a through ball and calmly levelled the match.

Fernandes then took control after the interval, scoring twice more to complete his hat-trick and put Manchester United firmly in command. Jacob Greaves then turned the ball into his own net before Bryan Mbeumo added a fifth late on to complete a convincing recovery.

Ipswich managed a second goal in stoppage time, with Chuba Akpom converting a delivery from Julio Enciso. By then, however, the damage had already been done, and the hosts held on to secure their first win of the season.

Chelsea maintain winning start

Chelsea also continued their perfect beginning to the campaign with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.

The Blues had opened the season with a win and quickly established control against Brighton, scoring three times during a dominant opening quarter.

Romeo Lavia, Pedro Neto and Joao Pedro were all on target in quick succession as Chelsea built a commanding lead.

Brighton responded within minutes of the interval. New signing Malick Yalcouye capitalised on poor defending before placing his effort into the far corner to give the Seagulls a route back into the match.

The visitors continued to threaten after the restart and were handed another boost when Joao Pedro inadvertently scored an own goal.

Chelsea restored their authority soon afterwards, with Cole Palmer taking advantage to score. Pascal Gross found the net for Brighton late on, but the hosts held out to complete an entertaining victory.

Sunderland leave Fulham without a point

Fulham remain without a win or a point after losing 1-0 to Sunderland through a late Wilson Isidor goal.

The first half produced no goals, with opportunities difficult to create at either end. Sunderland increased the pressure during the closing quarter and took the lead when Isidor met Habib Diarra’s delivery and finished smartly.

The Black Cats defended their advantage to secure the victory, leaving Fulham with back-to-back defeats and still waiting for their season to begin under manager Raul Albiol.

Calvert-Lewin rescues Leeds point

Brentford were denied consecutive wins and a perfect start after drawing 1-1 with Leeds United at Elland Road.

The Bees took the lead five minutes before the break. Kevin Schade moved towards the near post and met Keane Lewis-Potter’s cross, dispatching the delivery to give Brentford the advantage.

Leeds responded with 10 minutes remaining when Dominic Calvert-Lewin turned in a cross from Lukas Nmecha.

That equaliser earned Leeds a point and ended Brentford’s hopes of maintaining a 100% record at the start of the campaign.
