Karim Benzema’s Al Hilal spell could end with retirement decision

Karim Benzema is reportedly considering retiring from football altogether, with Al Hilal potentially becoming the final club of the former France international’s career.

Reports published on Sunday evening suggested the striker is thinking seriously about ending his playing days after being linked with a departure from the Saudi Arabian club.

Al Hilal are reported to be preparing a financial settlement with Benzema after completing a deal for Ollie Watkins, the Aston Villa forward. The developments have raised questions over whether the Frenchman will remain at the club beyond the current period.

According to Saudi newspaper Al Yaum, Al Hilal could represent the final chapter of Benzema’s career if the club decides to part company with him. The report added that Benzema does not want to embark on another footballing adventure and is seriously considering retirement after his time in Saudi Arabia.

No decision has been confirmed by Benzema or Al Hilal, but the reports indicate that the 38-year-old may be weighing up whether to continue playing or bring his career to an end.

Benzema built a distinguished career during 14 years with Real Madrid, where he won numerous major honours and established himself as one of the leading forwards of his generation. He left the Spanish club to join Al-Ittihad in the summer of 2023.

After his spell with Al-Ittihad, Benzema moved to Al Hilal in January 2026. His reported future at the club has now become uncertain following the imminent arrival of Watkins from Aston Villa.

The possible departure would come after Benzema’s long and decorated career in European football and his subsequent move to the Saudi Pro League. The reports suggest that, rather than seeking another club, he may choose to retire once his time with Al Hilal ends.
