Coventry secure year-long deal for dual-national defender Stephen Mfuni
England and DR Congo centre-back Stephen Mfuni has joined Coventry from Manchester City Under-21s on a season-long loan.
The 18-year-old defender completed the move on 30 August 2026, with the agreement running until 30 June 2027. Mfuni, who was born in Wigan, moves to Coventry after spending the opening part of the campaign with City’s development side.
Mfuni is a left-footed central defender who stands 1.93m tall. His arrival gives Coventry an option in defence with experience of Manchester City’s academy structure, although his senior competitive record remains at an early stage.
He joined Manchester City’s Under-21s from the club’s Under-18 side in July 2024, having previously progressed through the Manchester City youth set-up. Mfuni was part of the Under-21 team that won the Premier League 2 title in the 2024-25 season.
The defender also has a winners’ medal from Manchester City’s 2026 FA Cup triumph and League Cup success. Earlier in his development, he helped the club’s Under-18 side win the FA Youth Cup in 2023-24.
Mfuni spent the second half of the 2025-26 season on loan at Watford, joining them in January before returning to Manchester City Under-21s at the end of June. His move to Coventry is his second temporary transfer away from the City academy.
He has not made an appearance for Manchester City Under-21s in the listed Premier League 2 or EFL Trophy fixtures of the 2026-27 campaign before joining Coventry. His transfer takes place with his recorded market value at €1.5m, although no transfer fee has been stated for the loan.
Coventry have taken Mfuni for the remainder of the season, with the defender scheduled to return to Manchester City Under-21s when the loan ends on 30 June 2027.
