Tashreeq Matthews backs Mamelodi Sundowns to overturn Golden Arrows deficit

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Tashreeq Matthews says the team’s 5-2 win over AmaZulu has restored confidence as they prepare to face Golden Arrows in the decisive second leg of their MTN8 semi-final.

The clubs meet at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Sunday, with kick-off scheduled for 15:00.

Golden Arrows hold the advantage heading into the match after securing a surprise 1-0 victory against the Tshwane giants in the first leg in Pretoria last week. Sundowns must now overturn that deficit if they are to reach the next stage of the competition.

Their response against AmaZulu was therefore particularly significant for Matthews, who believes the emphatic result provided the ideal reaction to the disappointment of losing to Abafana Bes’thende.

Sundowns produced a strong attacking display in the Betway Premiership on Wednesday, scoring five times against AmaZulu. Matthews was also on the scoresheet, adding a personal boost before the high-pressure semi-final.

The midfielder said winning the league match and securing three points had helped the squad move forward quickly from the first-leg defeat. He also highlighted the value of delivering an encouraging performance before returning to MTN8 action.

“Obviously, it’s very important after a loss, and then winning, getting three points in the league, and then on to the next game, which is MTN8, which is the second leg,” said Matthews.

“It’s positive for us because from a win, positive display, very good.

“Also, I scored, so for me, it’s great, you know, whenever anyone scores, whenever a player scores, it always gives you more confidence to do well.

“Also, we won, so for us also, we feel very confident for the next game.”

Matthews’ goal against Usuthu came as Sundowns produced the five-goal performance they needed to rebuild momentum. He believes the combination of a convincing team victory and his own contribution can strengthen the players’ belief before Sunday’s meeting with Golden Arrows.

The result also gives Sundowns a positive platform as they attempt to recover from the narrow first-leg loss. Golden Arrows, however, will begin the second leg with their 1-0 lead and the opportunity to protect that advantage at home.

The tie will be decided at the King Zwelithini Stadium, where Sundowns need to score at least twice without conceding if they are to win the semi-final on aggregate. The match is scheduled to begin at 15:00 on Sunday.
