Newcastle United extend Tottenham Hotspur’s poor start as Omar Marmoush makes debut

Newcastle United defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in the second round of the Premier League, leaving Roberto De Zerbi’s side without a point after two matches and increasing the pressure on a club that has spent €354m during the current summer transfer window.

The defeat was Tottenham’s second in succession in the league. They began the campaign with a 3-0 loss to Brentford before being beaten by Newcastle, who moved up to third place with four points.

The match also marked Omar Marmoush’s first appearance for Tottenham since completing his move from Manchester City. The Egypt international started the game and played the full 90 minutes, but could not prevent his new side from suffering another defeat.

Tottenham’s spending was again highlighted by the result. The club have paid €354m so far to strengthen their squad this summer, while raising €165m through player sales. Despite that investment, they sit at the bottom of the Premier League table after two games.

Marmoush starts on Tottenham debut

De Zerbi selected Marmoush from the beginning, while Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle included Yoane Wissa in the attack.

Tottenham looked to take control early and created their first meaningful opportunity in the 16th minute. Marmoush played the ball to Mathys Tel before receiving it back and striking firmly, but Newcastle’s goalkeeper made the save.

A minute later, Pedro Porro produced a fine individual move inside the Newcastle penalty area. He evaded the challenge before shooting, although his effort struck a Newcastle defender and was diverted behind for a corner.

Marmoush continued to look for an opening and came close again in the 33rd minute. His shot from inside the penalty area, however, flew into the side-netting.

Tottenham were unable to turn their early pressure into a goal, and Newcastle took the lead 17 minutes after half-time. Anthony Elanga found the net with a finish from inside the penalty area to put the visitors ahead in the 62nd minute.

Newcastle then strengthened their position in the 73rd minute when Wissa doubled the advantage. The forward finished from inside the six-yard area, leaving Tottenham facing a difficult final period.

Marmoush attempted to reduce the deficit three minutes from the end of normal time, but his effort lacked power and was comfortably saved.

Tottenham could not find a response before the final whistle, and Newcastle held on to claim a 2-0 victory. The result extended Tottenham’s losing start to the league season, while Newcastle collected their first win and moved to four points from their opening two matches.
