Uganda goalkeeper Nafian Alionzi switches clubs in Ethiopia as Ethio Electric move for free
Uganda goalkeeper Nafian Alionzi has joined Ethio Electric from Mechal on a free transfer, completing a move between two clubs in Ethiopia’s Premier League.
Alionzi, 30, is a goalkeeper and was registered as an Ethio Electric player on 29 August 2026. He leaves Mechal after three years with the club, having moved there from Uganda’s URA FC in August 2023.
The transfer marks Alionzi’s return to a new chapter in Ethiopian football, where his previous and current clubs compete in the country’s top flight. Ethio Electric have assigned him the goalkeeper’s role, with the Ugandan arriving after his spell at Mechal came to an end.
Born in Adjumani, Uganda, on 1 March 1996, Alionzi began his senior career with Onduparaka FC. He joined URA FC in August 2016 before making the switch to Mechal seven years later. His career has therefore included clubs in both Uganda and Ethiopia.
Alionzi is listed at 1.79 metres tall and has Uganda as his sole recorded nationality. He joins Ethio Electric with a recorded market value of €150,000, although no fee was paid for the transfer.
The move was completed at the start of the 2026-27 season, with Alionzi leaving Mechal after their time together in the Ethiopian Premier League. Ethio Electric are now the latest club in a career that has taken him from Onduparaka and URA FC in Uganda to successive opportunities in Ethiopia.
Alionzi’s arrival gives Ethio Electric an established senior goalkeeper with experience of football in both countries. His move also continues the player’s progression through clubs after his transfer from URA FC to Mechal in 2023.
The Ugandan goalkeeper has completed his free transfer from Mechal to Ethio Electric.
