Jordy Makengo set to stay at SC Freiburg

Jordy Makengo will not leave SC Freiburg for AS Monaco after all.

The 25-year-old left-back had already reached a basic understanding with the Ligue 1 club, but the move collapsed because Freiburg and Monaco could not agree on a transfer fee.

That leaves Freiburg with a bit of breathing room on the left side of defence. Christian Gunter and Berkay Yilmaz already give the Bundesliga side useful alternatives, so the club can afford to wait rather than rush into a replacement.

Makengo’s contract still runs until 2028, which means Freiburg remain in a strong position if new offers arrive later in the window. Even so, a departure cannot be ruled out entirely, because the Frenchman is said to be open to a fresh challenge.

Makengo started his football career at US Villejuif Football (2016), FC Gobelins (2016-2017), and AJ Auxerre (2017-2019)

For now, though, the deal is off and Makengo stays in the Breisgau. Freiburg can move on knowing they have kept one of their defensive options intact while Monaco are forced to look elsewhere.

According to Transfermarkt, Makengo’s current market value is €6,000,000.
