Bouaddi makes instant impression on Manchester City debut in Crystal Palace win

Ayyoub Bouaddi made his first appearance for Manchester City on Friday, coming off the bench during the closing stages of a 4-1 Premier League victory at Crystal Palace.

The 18-year-old midfielder joined City from Lille in a deal worth up to €100m, including bonuses, making him the most expensive Moroccan player in transfer history and the costliest under-19 signing ever made by an English club.

That record fee placed considerable attention on Bouaddi’s first outing in Manchester City colours. However, he showed little sign of being affected by the occasion during his brief introduction at Selhurst Park.

Bouaddi entered the game in the 82nd minute, replacing Elliot Anderson, and was deployed alongside Mateo Kovacic in a double pivot. Although he had only a short time on the pitch, the Morocco international was regularly available to receive the ball, helped City maintain possession and looked to find space between the lines.

His performance was enough to attract favourable attention from sections of the English media. The Times described him as a “promising debutant” in its report of the match, highlighting the youngster’s confidence in possession and his willingness to move the ball forward.

Bouaddi’s most notable contribution came in added time. In the 92nd minute, he played a carefully weighted through ball into the Crystal Palace penalty area for Antoine Semenyo. The Ghanaian winger then attempted to pick out Erling Haaland, but his cross was blocked before it could reach the Manchester City striker.

The move offered City a chance to add a fifth goal and underlined Bouaddi’s ability to influence the game from a deeper midfield position.

He completed all 21 of his passes, including five in the final third. Those statistics provided an early indication of his technical quality, his ability to break through opposition lines and his composure when directing play from behind the attack.

Bouaddi was not selected in the starting line-up, with Enzo Maresca opting for Anderson and Nico O’Reilly, but his first appearance could give him encouragement as he adapts to the demands of English football.

The midfielder may have an opportunity to establish himself during the season in a Manchester City midfield that is without Rodri, Tijjani Reijnders and Nico Gonzalez. His prospects could also be affected by the club’s possible move for Enzo Fernandez.

For now, Bouaddi’s debut was limited to around 10 minutes, but his involvement at Crystal Palace gave City supporters an initial glimpse of the player behind the record-breaking transfer fee. His calm distribution and forward-thinking approach offered positive signs as he begins life at the club.
