Chadi Riad injury blow

Crystal Palace are reportedly moving to strengthen their defence after Moroccan international Chadi Riad suffered a serious knee injury that is expected to keep him out for an extended period.

Riad sustained a cruciate ligament injury during Palace’s 2-0 defeat by Everton in the opening round of the Premier League, leaving the club facing another lengthy absence for the Morocco defender.

Sky Sports reports that Palace are now considering Ecuadorian defender Joel Ordóñez of Club Brugge as they look to fill the gap created by Riad’s injury.

Riad suffers another injury setback

The latest injury represents another setback for Riad, who has endured a difficult spell with injuries since joining Crystal Palace in 2024.

Sky Sports reports that the Moroccan has spent 430 days sidelined with knee problems since arriving at the Premier League club.

Riad has made only 16 appearances in all competitions for Palace since his move from Spain, where he previously played for Barcelona and Real Betis.

Palace close in on Ordóñez

Crystal Palace have reportedly given the green light for Ordóñez to undergo a medical as they work towards completing a deal for the Club Brugge defender.

The Ecuador international is expected to join Palace on loan until the end of the season, with an obligation to buy for £24m.

His arrival would provide Palace with additional defensive cover while Riad begins his recovery.

Riad’s Palace spell interrupted

Riad had hoped to establish himself more consistently at Selhurst Park after helping Palace win the Europa League, Community Shield and FA Cup over the past two seasons.

However, injuries have restricted his involvement, and the latest cruciate ligament problem is another major obstacle in his bid to return to regular first-team football.

Palace will now look to complete the signing of Ordóñez as they prepare for life without the Moroccan defender for a significant period.
