Mamadou Sarr joins Real Sociedad on season-long loan from Chelsea

Mamadou Sarr has joined Real Sociedad from Chelsea on loan for the remainder of the season, with the Senegal international moving to Spain during the current summer transfer window.

Real Sociedad announced the defender’s arrival on a temporary deal, bringing an end to his immediate prospects of featuring for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Sarr joined Chelsea last summer after moving from French club Strasbourg, where he had enjoyed an impressive campaign before securing his transfer to the Premier League side.

However, the defender was not given the opportunity to play for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. He subsequently spent the final six months of the previous season back on loan with Strasbourg.

Sarr made seven appearances for Chelsea, but the limited first-team opportunities available to him have now led to another temporary move. His latest destination is Real Sociedad, who compete in La Liga.

The move gives Sarr the chance to continue his development in Spain while Real Sociedad add the Senegalese defender to their squad. The club confirmed the agreement as they prepare for their next league fixture.

Sarr was included in Senegal’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, although he remained on the substitutes’ bench throughout the tournament and did not feature.

His arrival comes at a difficult point in Real Sociedad’s season. They are 19th in La Liga, one place from the bottom, after losing both of their opening two matches.

Real Sociedad’s next opportunity to claim their first points will come against Espanyol at 20:00 on Saturday. The fixture will be their third league game of the campaign and Sarr’s new club will be seeking to recover from its disappointing start.

For Chelsea, the loan represents another stage in Sarr’s development after he made seven appearances for the club. He joined from Strasbourg following a strong season in France but was unable to establish himself in the Chelsea side.

The defender therefore returns to a new league after previously spending part of his career in France and making the move to England last summer. His season-long spell at Real Sociedad now provides the latest chapter in his progress since leaving Strasbourg.

Real Sociedad’s announcement confirms that Sarr will spend the season with the Spanish club, while his status remains linked to Chelsea. The Senegal international will now look to make an impact as his new side attempts to move away from 19th place in La Liga.
