Inter Miami agree deal for Kily Gonzalez after Guillermo Hoyos’ difficult run

Inter Miami have agreed a deal for Argentine coach Cristian Alberto “Kily” Gonzalez to become their new head coach, with Guillermo Hoyos set to leave the role after a decline in results.

Hoyos will remain in temporary charge until Gonzalez and his coaching staff can join the club in full. Gonzalez must first obtain the necessary work permits before taking up his position.

The agreement was confirmed in a statement from Inter Miami, published by Spanish newspaper Sport. Gonzalez has been without a club since leaving Platense in October 2025.

Inter Miami have failed to win any of their past five matches and were eliminated from the Leagues Cup during that run. The club are second in the Eastern Conference with 39 points, but are 10 points behind leaders Nashville SC.

Nashville SC inflicted a heavy defeat on Inter Miami two weeks ago, winning 4-1. Inter Miami have also been unable to record a victory in Major League Soccer over the past month.

Lionel Messi has scored in each of the club’s last two matches, although his goals have not been enough to prevent a poor sequence of results. He found the net in a 2-2 draw away to Philadelphia Union before scoring again in Inter Miami’s 2-1 home defeat by Toronto.

Gonzalez will succeed a fellow Argentine in Hoyos, who took charge in April after Javier Mascherano resigned for personal reasons. Before replacing Mascherano, Hoyos had been working as Inter Miami’s sporting director.

His spell as head coach began positively, with the team putting together a strong run of victories. However, performances and results have deteriorated over the past month, culminating in their exit from the Leagues Cup and a failure to win in MLS.

The change comes as Inter Miami remain in contention near the top of the Eastern Conference, despite their recent downturn. Gonzalez’s arrival is expected to provide a new direction once he receives clearance to work in the United States and joins the squad alongside his technical staff.

The club’s immediate priority will be to halt the winless run and close the gap on Nashville SC. Messi has returned to the scoresheet, but Inter Miami’s latest results have left the team under pressure as they attempt to recover their form in the league.
