Mamadou Sarr takes Chelsea exit to Real Sociedad in La Liga loan move

Senegalese-French centre-back Mamadou Sarr has joined Real Sociedad from Chelsea on loan, bringing the 20-year-old defender to La Liga for the 2026-27 campaign.

Sarr completed the move on 28 August and will remain with the Spanish club until 30 June 2027. The transfer takes him from the Premier League to a Real Sociedad side competing in Spain’s top flight, with the 1.94m right-footed defender adding centre-back experience to their squad.

The defender spent the previous season between Chelsea and Strasbourg. He began the 2025-26 campaign on loan at Strasbourg before returning to Chelsea on 2 February 2026. His permanent move to the London club had been completed in June 2025, when Chelsea signed him from Strasbourg for €14m.

Sarr had originally joined Strasbourg from Lyon in August 2024 for €10m. His time in France followed a progression through Lyon’s youth system, including a loan spell with Belgian club RWDM during the 2023-24 season.

He has already collected senior-level silverware with Chelsea, winning the FIFA Club World Cup in 2025. Earlier in his career, Sarr won the French Youth Cup with Lyon Under-19s during the 2021-22 season and helped France Under-17s become European champions in 2022.

Born in Martigues, France, Sarr is eligible to represent both Senegal and France. He has been included in the Senegal squad for the 2026 World Cup, although he has not made an appearance in the tournament. His move to Real Sociedad provides a change of club after a campaign split between Chelsea and Strasbourg.

At 20, Sarr arrives with a playing history that includes academy football at Lyon, a spell in Belgium, a permanent transfer to Strasbourg and a subsequent move to Chelsea. Real Sociedad have secured his services as he enters the next stage of his career in Spain.

Sarr’s loan agreement with Real Sociedad runs through 30 June 2027, when he is scheduled to return to Chelsea.
