Barcelona and Atletico Madrid chiefs’ Monaco meeting reignites Julian Alvarez transfer speculation
Cameras captured a private conversation between Barcelona vice-president Rafa Yuste and Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo at the Champions League draw in Monaco, fuelling speculation over the future of Julian Alvarez.
The exchange took place behind the scenes at the Grimaldi Hall before Thursday’s draw, where Yuste was representing Barcelona. The pair were seen speaking at length in footage recorded by TNT, although no details of their conversation have been made public.
Their meeting came only hours after Atletico Madrid issued a fresh statement making clear that Barcelona would not be allowed to open negotiations for Alvarez. The Argentina international is understood to be the leading attacking target identified by Barcelona manager Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco following the expected departure of Robert Lewandowski.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta had attempted to ease the situation on Wednesday by offering Atletico Madrid an opportunity to begin discussions. However, the response from the Madrid club was swift and unequivocal.
Despite Alvarez missing Atletico’s training at Majadahonda for a second consecutive day because of what was described as illness, the club released a stronger statement than its previous communication. It was jointly issued with the Apollo group, which owns Atletico Madrid, and reinforced public comments made by Cerezo and chief executive Miguel Angel Gil.
Both Atletico executives have already rejected the possibility of negotiating with Barcelona over the forward. The latest statement, backed by the club’s owners, was intended to confirm that position in the clearest possible terms.
The timing of the exchange between Yuste and Cerezo has therefore attracted particular attention. Barcelona’s representative and the Atletico president were seen together in Monaco while the Spanish club’s attempt to pursue Alvarez appears to have reached a dead end.
No explanation has yet been offered for the private discussion, and there is no confirmation that it concerned Alvarez. However, the circumstances have led to intense interest among Barcelona supporters, particularly after Atletico’s latest declaration that it has no intention of reconsidering its stance.
A video of the encounter was shared on social media with the caption:

For now, Atletico Madrid’s position remains firm. The club’s public statements, including the latest message supported by the ownership group, indicate that Barcelona is attempting to open a door that the Atletico hierarchy has firmly closed.
