Marseille considering move for experienced Cameroon forward Karl Toko Ekambi

Marseille are reportedly exploring the possibility of signing experienced Cameroonian forward Karl Toko Ekambi as they look to strengthen their attacking options before the close of the transfer window.

The 33-year-old is currently a free agent after leaving Qatari side Al-Arabi SC, making him an available option for Marseille as the club assess potential additions to their frontline.

According to reports, Marseille have opened talks with Toko Ekambi’s representatives over a possible move. The French club are understood to be attracted by his experience, versatility and familiarity with Ligue 1, qualities that could make him a useful addition to the squad.

Marseille are keen to add more experience and depth to their attack, and Toko Ekambi’s availability on a free transfer could make the Cameroon international an appealing option. His ability to operate as a centre-forward or from wider attacking positions could also provide Marseille with additional tactical flexibility.

Toko Ekambi has extensive knowledge of French football, having spent a significant part of his career in Ligue 1. He began his professional career at Paris FC before earning a move to Sochaux, where he continued his development as a striker.

His performances subsequently earned him a transfer to Angers, where he established himself as one of the league’s notable attacking players. His form in France eventually attracted the attention of Lyon, one of the country’s biggest clubs.

After joining Lyon, Toko Ekambi continued to feature prominently at the highest level of French football, gaining valuable experience in domestic competition as well as European football.

He later had a spell at Rennes before leaving France in 2023, beginning a new chapter of his career in the Gulf region.

Since his departure from Lyon in 2023, the Cameroonian forward has played for several clubs in Saudi Arabia. He first joined Abha Club during the 2023–24 season before moving to Al-Ettifaq for the 2024–25 campaign.

Toko Ekambi then continued his Saudi Arabian adventure with Al-Fateh SC during the 2025–26 season before moving to Qatar to join Al-Arabi SC.

Following his departure from Al-Arabi, he is now without a club and is assessing his next career move.

A return to Ligue 1 would represent a significant change for the veteran forward, but his previous experience in the competition could help him make a relatively smooth transition should Marseille decide to complete the move.

For Marseille, the potential signing would offer an experienced attacking option without the need to pay a transfer fee. The club would instead need to reach an agreement with the player over salary, contract length and other personal terms.

Toko Ekambi’s experience at the highest level could also be valuable inside a Marseille dressing room that continues to compete for major honours in France and on the European stage.

The Cameroonian international has also accumulated considerable experience with the national team, further adding to the qualities that Marseille are believed to appreciate.

At 33, Toko Ekambi would not necessarily represent a long-term investment for Marseille, but his immediate availability and knowledge of Ligue 1 could make him an attractive short-term solution as the club look to reinforce their attacking department.

For the player, meanwhile, a return to France could provide an opportunity to revive his Ligue 1 career after more than three years playing in the Middle East.

With discussions reportedly taking place between Marseille and his representatives, Toko Ekambi could yet make a return to French football before the transfer window closes.

A move to Marseille would see the experienced Cameroon forward return to the league where he made his professional name and where he previously enjoyed some of the most productive periods of his career.
