Djibril Gueye set to join Sporting after Leganés agreement

Senegalese defender Djibril Gueye has travelled to Portugal to complete his move from Leganés to Sporting Lisbon after the two clubs reached an agreement over the 19-year-old’s transfer.

The deal follows several weeks of negotiations between Sporting and the Spanish club, with an agreement now in place for the former AS Douanes player.

Gueye has been given permission to travel to Portugal, where he is expected to undergo his medical examination before completing the formalities of his move to Sporting.

According to Portuguese media outlet Record, Sporting will pay €4 million for the young defender.

The transfer will see Sporting add another promising Senegalese defender to their squad this summer. The Portuguese club have already completed the signing of 21-year-old Ibrahima Ba from Famalicão for €21 million.

Gueye’s move represents another step in the development of a player who has already experienced first-team football in Spain.

The 19-year-old made three appearances for Leganés’ senior side before Sporting moved to secure his services.

Although he has been involved with the first team at Leganés, Gueye is expected to begin his Sporting career with the club’s reserve side.

He is set to initially play for Sporting Lisbon’s second team in Portugal’s second division, allowing him to continue his development while gaining regular competitive football.

The agreement with Leganés brings an end to the negotiations that had been ongoing for several weeks.

Sporting’s interest in Gueye had been reported previously, with the Portuguese club working to reach an agreement with Leganés for the transfer of the young centre-back.

Those discussions have now concluded with the clubs reaching an agreement and the player travelling to Portugal to complete the next stage of the move.

For Gueye, the transfer provides an opportunity to continue his development at Sporting after his early experience with Leganés.

The defender’s immediate future is expected to be with Sporting’s reserve team, where he will look to gain playing time in the second division.

His move is also the latest step in a career that has taken him from AS Douanes in Senegal to European football, first with Leganés and now Sporting.

With the medical and contract signing still to be completed, Gueye is close to becoming a Sporting player after the Portuguese side agreed a €4 million transfer with Leganés.
