Ousmane Dembele: PSG’s long-term plans unchanged after Lille rest decision

Paris Saint-Germain have no significant concerns over Ousmane Dembele’s future despite the decision to leave the Ballon d’Or winner out of their upcoming match against Lille.

The France forward’s omission has renewed questions about his position at the club, particularly after he was taken off at half-time during Paris Saint-Germain’s opening league fixture against Rennes. However, the decision to rest him is not expected to affect ongoing discussions over a contract extension.

Paris Saint-Germain are working with Dembele’s representatives on a new agreement that would add either one or two years to his existing deal. If completed, the extension would keep the 28-year-old at the club until 2029 or 2030.

The negotiations have been under way for several months and are understood to be progressing positively. Both the player and the club are said to be in agreement over continuing their partnership, with no major concerns in Paris about the current situation, according to RMC Sport.

Talks will be put on hold temporarily during the final part of the summer transfer window before restarting once the window closes.

Why Dembele was left out

Dembele was substituted at half-time in the match against Rennes, alongside team-mate Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Paris Saint-Germain later decided to leave both players out of the squad for the forthcoming meeting with Lille in order to give Dembele a rest.

The decision followed a disappointing start to the campaign for the French side. Paris Saint-Germain drew 2-2 with Rennes after allowing their opponents to take a two-goal lead, a result that prompted the club’s management to take a firm approach ahead of the next fixture.
