Sunderland make loan approach for Manchester City winger Jack Grealish

Sunderland have submitted an offer to sign Jack Grealish on loan from Manchester City during the summer transfer window, according to The Athletic.

The proposal would see Manchester City continue to pay part of the 30-year-old’s wages, while Sunderland would have the option to make the move permanent next summer. That timing would coincide with the end of Grealish’s contract at Manchester City.

Grealish spent last season on loan at Everton but has already featured as a second-half substitute in each of Manchester City’s first two matches of the current campaign. He came on against Arsenal in The FA Community Shield and was also used from the bench against Bournemouth in the Premier League.

Sunderland are keen to add Grealish as they also pursue a deal for Marseille winger Igor Paixao. Personal terms are not considered to be an issue with the Brazilian, although the two clubs have yet to reach an agreement.

The Athletic reported in June that Manchester City were prepared to let Grealish leave this summer, either on loan or in a permanent transfer.

The former Aston Villa player’s role at Manchester City has diminished significantly in recent seasons. He started only seven Premier League matches during the 2024-25 campaign and was omitted from the squad for the final league fixture against Fulham.

Grealish was subsequently left out of Manchester City’s squad for the FIFA Club World Cup.

He joined Manchester City from Aston Villa in 2019 for £100m and has made 159 appearances for the club in all competitions. Grealish was an important member of the side that completed a historic treble in the 2022-23 season, winning the UEFA Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup. He played 50 times during that campaign.

In the following season, Grealish’s progress was disrupted by injuries. His involvement fell further last term, leading to his loan move to Everton.

He made 22 appearances for Everton before suffering a stress fracture in his foot in January. During his time at the club, Grealish scored twice and provided six assists.

Everton had an option to buy him for about £50m at the end of the loan, but chose not to activate it.

Sunderland’s interest comes as Manchester City continue to reshape their attacking options. The club received an offer from Tottenham Hotspur this summer for winger Savinho in a deal that could eventually be worth £85m.

Manchester City have also agreed to send Omar Marmoush on loan to the London club, with an obligation for Tottenham Hotspur to buy the player.
