Aston Villa submit transfer offer for Jean-Philippe Mateta

Aston Villa have submitted an offer for Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta as they prepare for the possible departure of Ollie Watkins.

The French forward has emerged as a leading option in Villa’s search for a new focal point in attack.

According to The Athletic, Villa’s opening proposal falls well below Palace’s valuation. The two clubs therefore remain some distance apart, and further negotiations will be needed if Unai Emery’s side are to make progress before the transfer window closes.

Mateta has become a key figure at Selhurst Park, producing 62 goals in more than 200 appearances for the Eagles. He also helped Palace win last season’s Europa Conference League, reinforcing his importance to the club and making a low-cost deal unlikely.

The 29-year-old’s form earned him a place in France’s World Cup squad this summer. Before establishing himself in England, Mateta spent time in the Bundesliga with Mainz 05, where he built a reputation as a strong, direct and effective centre-forward.

Villa see him as a credible replacement should Watkins leave. However, Palace are under no pressure to accept an offer that does not reflect Mateta’s value. The next move will depend on whether Villa return with an improved bid.
