Ivorian defender Guéla Doué becomes Bayer Leverkusen’s top transfer target

Bayer Leverkusen have reportedly made Strasbourg’s Ivory Coast international Guéla Doué their top transfer target as they look to strengthen at right-back.

According to Kicker, the German club’s management see the 23-year-old as a player capable of solving their problems in the position.

Leverkusen currently have Lucas Vázquez, Arthur and Axel Tape available at right-back, but none is considered an undisputed first-choice option.

€40m asking price could block deal

Despite Leverkusen’s strong interest, a deal for Doué is expected to be difficult to complete.

Strasbourg are reportedly demanding around €40m for the defender, a figure considered too high by the German club.

Doué’s contract with Strasbourg runs until 2029, giving the French side a strong negotiating position as Leverkusen weigh up whether to pursue the transfer.

Doué impresses for Strasbourg and Ivory Coast

Doué enjoyed an impressive campaign last season, making 34 appearances in all competitions for Strasbourg.

The right-back contributed two goals and seven assists, with his attacking ability and technical quality standing out.

His performances have also earned him an established role with the Ivory Coast national team.

The Angers-born defender has won 24 caps and scored three goals for the Elephants.

He also featured prominently at the latest World Cup, starting three of Ivory Coast’s four matches as they reached the round of 16.

Leverkusen’s interest now gives the Ivorian another opportunity to take the next step in his career, although Strasbourg’s €40m valuation could determine whether the Bundesliga club can turn their admiration into a formal transfer.
