Ferran Torres makes instant impact as Luis Enrique demands more from PSG stars

Ferran Torres scored twice on his Paris Saint-Germain debut after Luis Enrique substituted Ousmane Dembele at half-time, sending a clear message that reputation will not guarantee a place in the Spanish manager’s team.

PSG were 2-0 down to Rennes when Enrique made the decisive changes, removing Dembele and replacing him with new signing Torres. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was also taken off, with Mika Godts introduced as the manager sought to reshape a side that had endured a disastrous first half.

The response was immediate. Torres scored two goals on his first appearance for Paris Saint-Germain, helping the visitors recover to draw 2-2 and avoid what had threatened to become a surprise defeat.

Enrique’s decision to remove Dembele attracted particular attention on the French radio programme After Foot on RMC. Analysts viewed the move as a firm warning to the squad: no player’s status or reputation would protect them if their performance fell below the required standard.

“Once again, we saw a decision from a great manager, as he substituted the Ballon d’Or winner, and perhaps a future winner, at half-time, only to be rewarded with a 2-2 draw. Outstanding management from Luis Enrique,” said programme analyst Walid Acherchour.

Acherchour said the decision to replace both Dembele and Kvaratskhelia while PSG were two goals behind demonstrated that Enrique offered no special protection based on a player’s name or standing.

He added that the changes were intended to make it clear to the team’s leading players that a lack of intensity would not be tolerated.

“When Kvaratskhelia and Dembele are completely below their level in the first half, and then, when you are two goals down, you bring on Ferran Torres and Mika Godts, you are sending the message that status is not what matters. If you are not at your best, you are out of the contest,” Acherchour said.

Enrique rejected the idea that the substitutions were aimed personally at Dembele or Kvaratskhelia. Instead, the PSG manager said they reflected his wider belief that every player must continually demonstrate their readiness.

“Paris Saint-Germain have not won anything. If you focus on what you have won in the past, you will win nothing,” Enrique said after the match.

“The most important thing is that there is no room for complacency. You have to show every day, in every training session and in every match, that you are ready, otherwise it is easy to become complacent. We are always trying to win, and to keep winning, you have to step outside your comfort zone.”

Enrique’s adjustments were not limited to the attack. He also changed his midfield, bringing on Fabian Ruiz for Joao Neves before introducing Beraldo in place of Vitinha.

Those alterations helped give Paris Saint-Germain a different character after the interval. Having looked vulnerable and disjointed during the opening 45 minutes, they recovered from a two-goal deficit to secure a draw, while Torres’ two-goal debut reinforced the impact of the manager’s bold decisions.
