Aboutrika challenges Marmoush to make a career decision after Manchester City omission

Mohamed Aboutrika has urged Omar Marmoush to reconsider his future after the Egypt forward remained an unused substitute in Manchester City’s 2-1 Premier League victory over Bournemouth.

Manchester City began their league campaign under new Italian manager Enzo Maresca with a hard-fought win at Etihad Stadium on Sunday. However, Marmoush watched the entire match from the bench after Maresca made only four substitutions during the contest.

The Egyptian was named among Manchester City’s substitutes but was not introduced before the final whistle. His lack of involvement prompted former Egypt international Aboutrika to deliver a direct message to his compatriot during an appearance on beIN Sports.

“My message to Marmoush: look at yourself in the coming period. It is not right for Jack Grealish, with the level he is showing, to play while you are outside the team. You must think about the offers that come to you. A footballer cannot waste his career sitting on the bench,” Aboutrika said.

The comments come as Marmoush continues to be linked with a move away from Manchester City during the current transfer window. Several clubs are reportedly interested in signing the forward, whose situation has now drawn public scrutiny from one of Egypt’s most celebrated football figures.

Tottenham Hotspur have already held advanced talks with Manchester City over a possible deal for Marmoush. The club are seeking to strengthen their attacking options and provide manager Roberto De Zerbi with an alternative to the forwards currently in his squad.

Marmoush was included in Manchester City’s matchday squad for the opening fixture, but Maresca opted to leave him unused as his side secured all three points. The starting line-up featured Donnarumma, Khusanov, Dias, Guehi, Gvardiol, Lewis, Anderson, O’Reilly, Semenyo, Foden and Haaland.

Rulli, Marmoush, Kovacic, Cherki, Nico, Grealish, Ait-Nouri, Reis and Nunes were listed among the substitutes.

The result gave Manchester City a winning start to their Premier League campaign, despite Bournemouth making the game competitive. For Marmoush, though, the match has intensified questions over how he fits into Maresca’s plans and whether remaining at the club would provide him with sufficient opportunities.

Aboutrika’s intervention adds to the uncertainty surrounding the striker’s position. His advice was not simply focused on one unused substitute appearance, but on the wider risk of a player’s development being affected by a prolonged period on the bench.

With interest from other clubs and negotiations involving Tottenham Hotspur already described as advanced, Marmoush’s future could become one of the notable transfer storylines of the current window.
