Patrick Maswanganyi transfer speculation grows after Orlando Pirates omission

Evidence that Patrick Maswanganyi may be considering a move away from Orlando Pirates has intensified after coach Ouaddou declined to explain why the midfielder was left out of Saturday’s 1-0 MTN8 semi-final first-leg win in Polokwane.

The 28-year-old was available for selection but was not included in the match-day squad for the first time this season. His omission has added to growing suggestions of friction between Maswanganyi and the Orlando Pirates coaching staff, while reports of interest from the Middle East could offer the player significantly improved financial terms.

Maswanganyi is in his fourth season with Orlando Pirates and had started the club’s opening four matches of the campaign. He has already contributed one goal and one assist, making his absence from the squad particularly notable.

Ouaddou was asked about the midfielder after Orlando Pirates secured an advantage in the MTN8 semi-final, but the coach did not provide a detailed explanation and did not mention Maswanganyi by name in his initial response.

“For the other player (Maswanganyi), I cannot say too much about the issue,” pointed out Ouaddou.

“He is not injured.

“He was available, but I cannot speak about something that I don’t masterise,” noted the coach.

The comments did little to settle questions surrounding Maswanganyi’s position at the club. Instead, they have fuelled speculation that his omission was connected to matters beyond a routine selection decision.

There have also been suggestions that Maswanganyi has not always aligned with Ouaddou’s demanding tactical approach. The coach’s philosophy places emphasis on moving the ball quickly, an aspect in which the player from Tembisa has reportedly been viewed as falling short of the required standard.

Those differences, combined with the growing transfer talk, have led to suggestions that the relationship between the player and the club may be under strain. The possibility of a move to the Middle East would give Maswanganyi the opportunity to improve substantially on his current terms.

Saturday’s match was the first occasion this season on which Maswanganyi was not named in the Orlando Pirates squad. Ouaddou’s reluctance to discuss the reasons behind the decision has ensured that uncertainty remains over the midfielder’s immediate future.

Orlando Pirates’ victory in Polokwane, secured by a 1-0 scoreline, gives them an advantage in the MTN8 semi-final. However, the result was accompanied by renewed focus on Maswanganyi, whose early-season involvement had suggested he remained an important member of the squad.

For now, there has been no confirmation that the player is seeking a transfer or that Orlando Pirates have received a formal offer. But the combination of his unexpected omission, the coach’s guarded comments, reported tactical disagreements and interest from the Middle East has strengthened the belief that his future at the club may be uncertain.
