Chelsea sanction Benoit Badiashile loan move as Napoli seek defensive boost
Chelsea defender Benoit Badiashile has joined Napoli on a season-long loan after falling out of manager Xabi Alonso’s plans for the new campaign.
The move was confirmed by Chelsea on their official website, with the 25-year-old France international set to wear the Italian club’s colours during the coming season. Badiashile has won two caps for France.
The temporary transfer gives the defender an opportunity to revive his form and regain a regular role after his involvement at Chelsea declined. He will return to Stamford Bridge when the loan agreement ends.
Badiashile joined Chelsea from Monaco in January 2023 and has made 71 appearances for the London club in all competitions. However, he was not included in Alonso’s plans for the new season, making a temporary departure the most suitable option for both the player and Chelsea.
The Frenchman will now hope to secure more playing time in Italy and rediscover the level he showed during his spell with Monaco. His move to Napoli represents an opportunity to rebuild his confidence and re-establish himself as a central defensive option before returning to Chelsea.
For Napoli, the agreement provides the club with the chance to make use of Badiashile’s defensive ability during the new campaign. The Italian side will be looking for the defender to contribute after his reduced role in west London.
Badiashile’s departure comes as he attempts to prove himself again following the loss of prominence within Chelsea’s squad. The loan allows him to continue his career elsewhere rather than remain outside the manager’s immediate plans, while Chelsea retain his services beyond the end of the season.
The defender’s time at Chelsea began after his arrival from Monaco in January 2023. Since then, he has featured 71 times across all competitions, but his position within the squad changed ahead of the new campaign.
His next challenge will be to establish himself at Napoli, earn the greater involvement he is seeking and reproduce the performances that made him an important player at Monaco. He is expected to return to Chelsea after completing the season-long loan.
