Marumo Gallants turn to former Orlando Pirates striker Thabiso Kutumela
Marumo Gallants are close to signing former Orlando Pirates striker Thabiso Kutumela as they seek an urgent solution to their difficult start to the Betway Premiership season.
Gallants have taken only one point from their opening three matches, drawing once and losing twice. That run leaves them bottom of the standings and has increased the pressure on Phuti Mohafe’s side.
The club narrowly avoided a play-offs place last season, and its early results have raised concerns that another difficult campaign could be developing. Gallants are now hoping Kutumela can provide the goals needed to improve their position.
Sources close to the club say the experienced forward has agreed terms and is expected to complete the move shortly. The striker has been training with Gallants and could sign at any time.
“Kutumela is here. He is training with Marumo Gallants. He is expected to sign with the club anytime soon,” revealed one source.
The 31-year-old forward has built a reputation as a well-travelled striker during his career and has previously been on the books of Orlando Pirates. Gallants are now looking to his experience as they attempt to address their problems in front of goal.
The possible arrival comes at a crucial point for the club. With no win from their first three league fixtures, Gallants have made a poor start and currently sit at the foot of the Betway Premiership table.
Their next opportunity to change that run comes on Tuesday, when they host TS Galaxy at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium. The match will be the first fixture after the club’s decision to pursue Kutumela and will offer Gallants a chance to respond to their early-season setbacks.
For Mohafe’s men, the immediate priority is to move away from the bottom of the standings. Their narrow escape from a play-offs position last term means the club will be keen to avoid another prolonged battle for survival.
Gallants’ search for a goalscorer follows three matches in which the team has failed to establish a winning platform. The club’s decision to move for Kutumela reflects the need for greater attacking threat, with the striker’s impending arrival expected to strengthen their options up front.
The transfer has not yet been formally completed, but the player’s presence in training and agreement over personal terms suggest the move is close. If the deal is finalised soon, Kutumela could become an important figure as Gallants attempt to recover from their early setback and begin climbing the Betway Premiership table.
