New Caledonia reveal squad for first Women’s U20 World Cup finals

New Caledonia have named the 20-player squad that will represent them at their first Women’s U20 World Cup finals, where they will face Nigeria, Spain and China in Group F.

The squad was announced by head coach Leon Waitronyie as New Caledonia prepare for a historic appearance on the international stage. The tournament will be the first time the country have featured in the finals of the FIFA Women’s U20 World Cup.

Waitronyie has selected a group of 20 players for the campaign, with captain Kamen Slimane set to lead the team. New Caledonia will rely on their collective strength as they prepare to take on three established opponents in the group.

Their opening match will be against China, who have reached the final of the competition twice. New Caledonia will then face Spain, the reigning world champions after their triumph in 2022, before completing the group stage against Nigeria.

The challenge will be significant, but the event represents a landmark moment for New Caledonian women’s football. The players selected will be the first from the country to compete in a Women’s U20 World Cup finals tournament.

The squad includes three goalkeepers, eight defenders, four midfielders and five forwards.

China bring the experience of two previous final appearances, while Spain arrive as the holders after winning the 2022 edition. Nigeria will provide the final challenge in the group.

With their squad now confirmed, the Filles Cagous can focus on their first match and the chance to make history in their debut Women’s U20 World Cup finals appearance.
