Hany Hathout, the prominent Egyptian sports presenter, shed light on the Egyptian Football Association’s (EFA) decision to part ways with Portuguese coach Rui Vitoria, unveiling intriguing details surrounding the departure.
Speaking on the “Al-Match” program aired on “Sada El-Balad” channel, Hathout stated that the EFA initially desired to continue Vitoria’s tenure with the Egyptian national team.
However, the outcomes of the Africa Cup of Nations 2023 expedited his departure.
Acknowledging Vitoria’s contributions, Hathout expressed gratitude for the coach’s time with the Egyptian national team.
He emphasized that Vitoria’s lack of experience with national teams before leading the Pharaohs should not be seen as a shortcoming, drawing parallels with former Argentine coach Hector Cuper.
Highlighting the variability in expectations with different managers, Hathout stressed that the primary goal of the EFA, upon hiring Vitoria, was to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
The absence of a clause regarding success in the Africa Cup of Nations was a significant oversight by the EFA, one that must be acknowledged.
Hathout underlined Vitoria’s flexible and understanding approach during the discussions about his dismissal.
The coach was informed of his termination amicably before the official announcement, a gesture that Vitoria accepted graciously, expressing his desire for better outcomes.
Hathout added, “CAF stated that despite Egypt’s exit, it was the team with the most possession and threats to opponents’ goals.”
Moreover, the EFA aims to reach an amicable resolution with Vitoria concerning financial dues, proposing a possible installment plan and hoping for his consent to a one-month deduction from his entitlements.
Vitoria has entrusted his non-Egyptian agent and lawyer to negotiate the settlement of his dues.
