Pirates receive boost as Tshepang Moremi injury setback appears minor

Orlando Pirates are hopeful Tshepang Moremi will return soon after sources indicated the winger is unlikely to face a lengthy spell out with injury.

The Bafana Bafana international missed Pirates’ 3-0 victory over Chippa United after being forced to undergo a late fitness assessment before the match. Moremi had picked up a knock during the Buccaneers’ 1-1 draw with AmaZulu at Kings Park Stadium.

Although he was ultimately ruled out of the win over the Chilli Boys, the early indications are that his absence should be short-lived. Moremi is expected to resume training and compete for selection in Pirates’ next matches, providing a welcome boost for head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.

The update comes at a particularly useful time for Pirates, who have already suffered a significant injury setback involving midfielder Sihle Nduli.

Nduli was forced off during the match against AmaZulu after a heavy challenge caused a serious ankle problem. Subsequent examinations by the club’s medical team confirmed that he had sustained a Grade 3 ligament tear.

Pirates say Nduli is expected to be sidelined for about four months, ruling him out for the remainder of the year. The injury is especially disappointing for the midfielder, who had only recently returned to action after a lengthy absence caused by a previous injury.

Moremi’s anticipated return would therefore give Ouaddou another attacking option as Pirates manage a busy opening period of the campaign. The winger’s pace has made him an important part of the squad, and his availability would strengthen the coach’s options following the impressive victory against Chippa United.

Kabelo Dlamini could also be available again soon, with sources indicating that he is nearing a return to contention. His comeback would provide further depth for a Pirates side attempting to maintain momentum at the start of the season.

The news is less positive regarding some of the club’s other injured players. Evidence Makgopa and Thalente Mbatha are among those dealing with longer-term injuries and are not expected to offer Ouaddou an immediate solution.

Pirates will consequently have to continue without Nduli while waiting for further progress from their other absentees. However, the expected availability of Moremi and Dlamini offers some relief after the confirmation of Nduli’s serious ankle injury.

Moremi, in particular, is likely to be back in the selection picture soon as Pirates seek to build on their convincing win over Chippa United.
