Cassius Mailula reaches 10 Mamelodi Sundowns league goals in elite company

Cassius Mailula has joined an exclusive group in Mamelodi Sundowns’ Premier Soccer League history after scoring his 10th league goal for the club in the equaliser against Kaizer Chiefs.

The striker reached the landmark in only 17 appearances across two spells with the Brazilians, according to OptaJabu. That record places him third among Sundowns players who have reached 10 PSL goals in the fewest matches.

Only Lucas Ribeiro and Brayan Leon achieved the milestone faster during the club’s PSL era. Ribeiro remains the benchmark, having scored 10 league goals in just 12 appearances, while Leon reached the same total after 15 matches.

Mailula’s 17-game tally puts him ahead of several of Sundowns’ established goalscorers. Raphael Chukwu needed 19 appearances to reach 10 league goals, while Peter Shalulile took 20 matches.

Leonardo Castro and Iqraam Rayners both required 21 games to reach the mark, with Nyasha Mushekwi completing the top eight after scoring 10 league goals in 22 appearances.

Mailula’s achievement is particularly notable because his goals have come over two separate spells with Sundowns. Despite spending time away from Chloorkop, he has continued to produce at an impressive rate whenever given the opportunity.

His return suggests that the striker remains well suited to Sundowns’ attacking system and has retained the sharpness required to convert chances in front of goal. Reaching double figures in only 17 appearances underlines his efficiency at league level.

The equaliser against Kaizer Chiefs has therefore secured more than a single point on Mailula’s personal record. It has also placed him among a select group of forwards who have made an exceptionally fast start to their Sundowns careers in the PSL era.

Ribeiro’s 12-match record still stands as the fastest route to 10 league goals, with Leon next on 15 appearances. Mailula now sits immediately behind them, above Chukwu, Shalulile, Castro, Rayners and Mushekwi.

With the milestone achieved, Mailula will now look to increase his total as Mamelodi Sundowns pursue another dominant campaign.
