Arsenal punish Manchester City with 3-0 win to lift Community Shield

Arsenal secured the Community Shield with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Manchester City at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on Sunday, claiming the trophy for the 18th time in their history.

The Premier League champions made the ideal start, taking the lead after just 23 seconds. Riccardo Calafiori finished the opening attack after being found by an excellent pass from team-mate Myles Lewis-Skelly.

Rather than retreat after scoring so early, Arsenal continued to play on the front foot throughout the match. Mikel Arteta’s side created the greater threat and repeatedly tested a Manchester City defence that struggled to gain control of the contest.

City had some possession and produced a small number of opportunities, but they were unable to establish any sustained attacking rhythm. Arsenal controlled the tempo for long periods and looked the more convincing team across both halves.

The Gunners doubled their advantage in the 28th minute. Martin Odegaard delivered a cross into the area, and new signing Christos Tzolis headed the ball across goal for Kai Havertz to complete the move with another header.

Manchester City dominated the ball to some extent during the first half, but their possession rarely developed into meaningful pressure on David Raya’s goal. Arsenal reached half-time with a deserved 2-0 lead.

Arsenal maintain control after the break

City’s new manager Enzo Maresca attempted to change the course of the match by introducing Jack Grealish, Omar Marmoush and Rayan Cherki. The substitutions, however, did not lead to an improvement in either the performance or the scoreline.

Arsenal added a third goal only three minutes into the second half. Tzolis produced another fine pass, sending Martin Odegaard into the Manchester City penalty area. The Norway international then moved beyond the defenders before calmly placing the ball past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma in the 48th minute.

The goal appeared to drain much of the belief from City’s players. Arsenal remained in command and continued to find space in dangerous areas, while Arteta used a series of substitutions to manage his squad and provide playing time to other members of his team.

Among those introduced were Bukayo Saka, Viktor Gyokeres and Eberechi Eze. The changes did not disrupt Arsenal’s control, and the London side continued to threaten until the final stages.

Arsenal missed several further chances that could have made the margin of victory even greater, but the 3-0 scoreline still represented a decisive opening statement ahead of the new English season.

For Manchester City, the heavy defeat may raise concerns among supporters after the departure of long-serving manager Pep Guardiola at the end of last season and the appointment of Maresca as his replacement. Their performance in Cardiff offered little evidence that the side had yet found the response required for the campaign ahead.
