PSG pull out of Zion Suzuki deal after agent commission dispute

Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly abandoned their move for Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki after a dispute over agents’ commissions caused the proposed transfer to collapse.

Suzuki had been expected to join the French champions from Parma for a fee of about €35m, but the deal fell through on Saturday following disagreement over the financial demands of his representatives.

According to L’Équipe, Suzuki’s agents were initially due to receive a standard commission from PSG equivalent to around 10% of the goalkeeper’s annual salary, alongside an additional percentage of the transfer fee agreed with Parma.

However, the negotiations changed during the final stages of the deal.

The player’s representatives are reported to have demanded €3m over the past 48 hours, a request that PSG ultimately did not accept.

The situation has created a major obstacle in a transfer that had appeared close to completion, with the Paris club reportedly viewing the additional demand as unacceptable.

The collapse of the agreement has also been linked to the emergence of interest from the Premier League.

Aston Villa have entered the picture and are now reportedly considered a possible destination for the Japanese goalkeeper.

According to the report, the English club’s involvement may have contributed to the increase in the commission demanded by Suzuki’s representatives.

The regulations surrounding agents’ fees in England are also described as more flexible than those in France, adding another element to the developing transfer situation.

However, Suzuki’s representatives have rejected the version of events suggesting they deliberately increased their demands because of Aston Villa’s involvement.

The goalkeeper’s camp instead maintains that moving to Birmingham would provide Suzuki with the best opportunity to secure a regular starting position.

That difference in perspective has left PSG without the goalkeeper they had been targeting this summer.

Suzuki’s proposed move to Paris had been one of the club’s major goalkeeper developments during the transfer window, but the breakdown of negotiations now appears to have brought their pursuit to an end.

The financial disagreement therefore has significant consequences for all parties.

PSG have walked away from a transfer that was reportedly worth around €35m, while Suzuki must now consider whether a move to England can provide the next step in his career.

Aston Villa’s involvement has given the situation a fresh direction, although the goalkeeper’s camp and the clubs involved have differing accounts of how the negotiations reached this point.

For PSG, the collapse also brings an end to their search for a goalkeeper during the summer transfer window, leaving the club to move forward with their existing options.

The failed deal could consequently benefit Lucas Chevalier, with PSG’s decision to abandon the Suzuki transfer potentially opening the door for the French goalkeeper.
