Pirates seek immediate response against Chippa after AmaZulu draw

Orlando Pirates will aim to return to winning ways when they meet Chippa United at Kings Park Stadium on Sunday, with the defending Betway Premiership champions looking to restore momentum after dropping their first league points of the season.

Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side began their title defence with victory over newly promoted Milford FC but were held by AmaZulu in midweek. The result left Pirates without a win in their latest league fixture and increased the importance of their meeting with Chippa United as the early-season table begins to take shape.

Ouaddou was unhappy with the outcome against AmaZulu and will expect a more authoritative performance from his players on Sunday. Another failure to win would represent a second setback in quick succession for the champions and place greater focus on the start they have made to their title defence.

Pirates have already faced a demanding schedule in the opening weeks of the campaign. Alongside their Betway Premiership commitments, the Buccaneers have also had to compete in the MTN8.

They defeated Durban City after extra time in the cup before returning to league action, leaving Ouaddou with the task of managing his squad while ensuring the team maintains its intensity. The short turnaround has made preparation and squad balance particularly important for the defending champions.

Chippa United also enter the match still searching for their first victory of the campaign. The Chilli Boys will view the fixture as an opportunity to make an early statement against one of the country’s strongest squads and the reigning champions.

They will need to frustrate Pirates initially, with a disciplined defensive display likely to be central to their approach. Chippa can then look to take advantage of any spaces left behind by the Buccaneers when they commit players forward.
