Mbappe confident Real Madrid can win trophies under Jose Mourinho

Kylian Mbappe says Real Madrid are determined to challenge for every available trophy this season and believes Jose Mourinho’s experience of winning can guide the club back to silverware.

Mbappe returned to training at Real Madrid after being given additional time off following his involvement with France at the 2026 World Cup. France finished fourth after losing 6-4 to England.

Speaking to Real Madrid’s official channel, Mbappe said he was delighted to be back at the club and preparing for the new campaign.

“I am happy to be back, to train and to get to know the new coaching staff. It is always great to see my team-mates again. It is nice to be back here, at Valdebebas, to work, play and prepare for the season,” he said.

The France forward said the pre-season period was an opportunity for the squad to work at maximum intensity before competitive fixtures begin.

“I try to give my best because this is the time when we can work more and at full strength. After that, the run of matches begins, and we have to be ready for the first league game,” Mbappe added.

Real Madrid finished second in La Liga last season behind champions Barcelona. They will start their new campaign away to Espanyol on Saturday, 22 August, in the second round of fixtures after their opening match was postponed because many of their players reached the latter stages of the 2026 World Cup.

Their rearranged first-round match against Real Sociedad will take place on Wednesday, 26 August, at Santiago Bernabeu.

Mbappe believes the club’s ambitions must be matched by results.

“We have to win. I think we will win trophies this year, and I am sure of that. That is what we want, and it will happen. I feel the team has a great desire, and we will remain focused throughout the year to make the fans happy,” he said.

Mourinho is beginning a new spell in charge of Real Madrid, and Mbappe said the Portuguese manager’s record made his appointment a positive development for the squad.

“I arrived a few days ago. I think it is very positive to have a coach like Mourinho because he knows how to win, and he knows how to identify the path we must take to achieve victories,” said Mbappe.

“Every player is happy to have a coach who knows where he is going, and I think that is a very positive thing for us.”

Mbappe also reflected on his first appearance for Real Madrid against Atalanta. The occasion ended with him scoring and the Spanish club winning a trophy.

“It was a very special day. A debut with any team is special, but if it is with Real Madrid, it is much more than that. It is even more magical,” he said.

“I scored a goal, we won a trophy and everything was wonderful. It was a big change for me because it was the first time I had left my country.”

Mbappe said he had quickly developed a strong affection for the club, Spanish football and life in Madrid.

“I love the club and La Liga very much. I love living in Spain and Madrid, discovering the city and feeling comfortable here. Now it is time to take a step forward and win trophies,” he said.

“It was a dream for me to come here, and it is still a dream to be here every day. I am someone who knows how to enjoy the present, and I know I am lucky to be here.”

He added: “But now we have to win. You can be at a big club, but you have to win trophies, and that is what we will do this year.”

Mbappe has made 103 appearances for Real Madrid, scoring 86 goals and providing 12 assists. During his time at the club, he has won the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.

Real Madrid have played three pre-season matches and have one remaining fixture before the competitive campaign begins. They drew 2-2 with Fiorentina in their first friendly, beat Ferencvarosi 2-1 in their second and defeated Deportivo La Coruna 1-0 on Wednesday.

Their final pre-season test will be against German side Schalke.
