Ghana’s Josephine Bonsu impressed by Black Queens’ comeback win over Cote d’Ivoire

Black Queens defender Josephine Bonsu has expressed her delight at Ghana’s response in the second half of their 2-1 comeback victory over Côte d’Ivoire in the WAFCON play-in.

Ghana secured one of Africa’s two places in the FIFA Women’s World Cup Play-Off Tournament after overturning an early deficit at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca on Thursday.

The Ivorians took the lead after just four minutes through Ines Konan’s penalty, leaving Ghana trailing at halftime despite creating opportunities.

Bonsu said the Black Queens recognised at the break that a significant improvement was required and praised the team for responding strongly after the interval.

“As you say, it was a needed game, but it wasn’t easy at all. As you can see, we didn’t start strong at all. They came really strong at us.

“But I’m really impressed because in the halftime, we knew we would have to be 70% better than the first half and we did it. And I’m really happy we got the win and that the tournament is finally over.”

Princess Marfo restored parity after the break, heading home from Stella Nyamekye’s corner before Bonsu completed the comeback from the penalty spot 13 minutes later.

Ghana survived late pressure from Côte d’Ivoire, with goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan making an important save to preserve the victory.

The result means Ghana will continue their World Cup qualification journey through the FIFA Play-Off Tournament later this year.
