English-Nigerian forward Ethan Nwaneri set to stay at Arsenal as Dortmund transfer hopes fade

Ethan Nwaneri is increasingly expected to remain at Arsenal this summer, dealing a blow to Borussia Dortmund’s hopes of signing the teenage attacking midfielder.

The 19-year-old, who has Nigerian heritage, spent the previous season on loan at Marseille but appears to have changed Arsenal’s plans for his immediate future after making a strong impression during pre-season.

Arteta impressed by Nwaneri’s progress

Nwaneri featured in Arsenal’s 1-1 pre-season draw with Como, after which manager Mikel Arteta highlighted the youngster’s performances and development.

“He was really good,” said Arteta. “What happened on the pitch during his loan spell at Marseille probably didn’t meet expectations. There was a lot of turmoil and change surrounding the club. But he seems different. He seems more mature. He’s doing incredibly well. That’s what six months can do. (…) I’m very happy with what he’s done in preseason.”

Arteta’s assessment indicates that Nwaneri is now being considered for a role in Arsenal’s senior squad rather than another temporary move or a permanent transfer.

Dortmund face disappointment

Dortmund had identified Nwaneri as a potential target earlier in the summer, but the German club now appears unlikely to secure his signature during this transfer window.

Arsenal’s change in their assessment of the midfielder means Dortmund’s chances of completing a deal are fading, with a move only likely to become possible if Nwaneri himself pushes for a transfer.

That scenario is not currently expected, leaving the England youth international on course to remain at the Emirates and compete for a place in Arteta’s first-team plans.

For Nwaneri, whose Nigerian heritage makes his progress closely followed by African football supporters, a breakthrough at Arsenal would represent another significant step in his development after his difficult spell in France.
