Seko Fofana’s Rennes future rests on whether interested clubs improve their offers

Stade Rennais are unwilling to let Ivory Coast international Seko Fofana leave on unfavourable terms, after reportedly receiving several proposals for the midfielder.

According to Jeunesfooteux, none of the approaches has met the French club’s expectations. Rennes believe the offers made for the 31-year-old are financially insufficient and have no intention of allowing him to depart unless the conditions are significantly improved.

The strongest proposal received so far is understood to be a straightforward loan without an option to buy. The unnamed interested club would also cover less than 40% of Fofana’s salary under the suggested agreement.

That offer was quickly turned down by Stade Rennais, who considered the financial terms too weak. The club are therefore expected to continue assessing Fofana’s situation while waiting for a bid that better reflects their valuation of the player.

Fofana has officially returned to Rennes following a six-month loan spell at FC Porto. During his time in Portugal, he helped the Dragons win the league title, making 12 appearances and scoring three goals, while also providing one assist.

The midfielder is valued at €8m by Transfermarkt. His annual salary in France is reported to be €4.55m, equivalent to 2,957,500,000 CFA francs.

Fofana joined Stade Rennais in January 2025 from Al Nassr in a deal worth about €20m. He remains under contract with the club until 2029, meaning Rennes are under no immediate pressure to sell and can take a firm position in negotiations.

His future remains uncertain, but the club’s current stance could result in him staying in Ligue 1 for the coming season. Rennes appear determined to secure a proposal that matches their expectations before considering a permanent or temporary departure.

The club will soon begin its French league campaign against PSG in the opening round of the championship. Fofana’s position in the squad for that fixture could provide an early indication of how Rennes intend to handle his situation, although no decision on his future has been confirmed.
