Paul Pogba’s Monaco future fades as injury delays next move
Paul Pogba’s short-lived spell with Monaco appears to be coming to an end after another injury left the former France international facing a six-week absence, with clubs in Major League Soccer and Saudi Arabia reportedly showing interest.
It is almost three weeks since Monaco and Pogba announced that they were heading towards an agreement to part company, but the midfielder had continued to train with the squad and had even featured during the club’s pre-season preparations.
Pogba initially returned to the training pitch after a difficult start to Monaco’s build-up for the new campaign. The 2018 World Cup winner then took part in half of the club’s first friendly match, a 5-2 victory over Saint-Priest.
However, his latest setback is expected to bring his time at Monaco to an end. Pogba sustained an injury to his left thigh during a training session at the club’s camp in England earlier this week.
The injury represents another major blow for the 33-year-old, who is not expected to play for Monaco again. Several media outlets have reported that his contract with the club is set to be terminated, despite the existing agreement running until June 2027.
Monaco sporting director Thiago Scuro had already hinted at a premature conclusion to the relationship during a pre-season news conference. His comments came as uncertainty continued over Pogba’s role at the club, even though the player had been involved in training and match preparation.
According to French newspaper L’Equipe, Pogba has received offers from clubs in Major League Soccer and Saudi Arabia. However, his current injury means he is expected to be unavailable for training for approximately six weeks.
The timing is particularly unhelpful for Pogba as he considers his next move and attempts to find a new club. A lengthy absence will limit his immediate options, although his anticipated status as a free agent should provide him with greater flexibility.
Once he is released, Pogba would be able to sign for a club at any time, including after the transfer window has closed. That could allow him to continue discussions with interested teams while recovering from his thigh injury before deciding where to resume his career.
His Monaco adventure began with the prospect of a return to regular football, but it has instead been disrupted by uncertainty over his contract and another physical setback. The latest injury now appears to have accelerated the end of his association with the club, while potential opportunities in the United States and Saudi Arabia remain open.
