Kvaratskhelia and Doue fire Paris Saint-Germain to UEFA Super Cup success

Paris Saint-Germain, the reigning UEFA Champions League holders, have won the UEFA Super Cup after beating Aston Villa 2-1 in Salzburg.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia gave the French side the lead in the 20th minute before Desire Doue doubled their advantage shortly after the hour mark. Brian Madjo pulled a goal back for Aston Villa in the 45th minute, but Paris Saint-Germain held on to secure the trophy.

Aston Villa entered the match as winners of last season’s UEFA Europa League, while Paris Saint-Germain qualified as champions of the UEFA Champions League. The meeting in Salzburg therefore brought together the holders of Europe’s two leading club competitions.

Paris Saint-Germain had been viewed as the stronger side before kick-off. The French club was priced at 1.85 to win, compared with odds of 4.6 for an Aston Villa victory. A draw at the end of normal time was listed at 3.9.

Those figures reflected the expectation that Paris Saint-Germain would prevail, and the result ultimately matched the pre-match assessment. Kvaratskhelia’s early strike put the Rouge et Bleu in front, with Doue later extending their lead to 2-0.

Aston Villa responded through Madjo’s goal in the 45th minute, keeping the score close. However, the English side could not find another equaliser, allowing Paris Saint-Germain to complete a 2-1 victory and add the UEFA Super Cup to their recent European success.
