Desire Doue challenges PSG to turn Super Cup success into a season of trophies

Desire Doue says Paris Saint-Germain’s desire to keep winning has made them “unbeatable” after he scored the decisive goal in their 2-1 victory over Aston Villa in the European Super Cup.

The France international’s goal on Wednesday secured PSG their second European Super Cup triumph, but Doue believes the victory marks only the beginning of what could become an exceptional campaign for the Parisian club.

Asked what had made Paris Saint-Germain so difficult to beat, the young forward told Canal+: “It’s our mentality. We are always hungry to win and always striving to be at the top of the competition.”

Doue said PSG had once again shown the qualities that have helped them compete successfully at the highest level. He highlighted their efficiency in front of goal and their defensive organisation, despite conceding against an Aston Villa side he described as a formidable opponent.

“We showed once again some of the best things about us,” he said. “We were effective and defended well even though we conceded that goal. Aston Villa are a very strong team.”

The victory came at a relatively early stage of the season, with several members of the squad only recently returning to training following their holidays. Doue said the circumstances had made PSG’s performance even more significant.

“We know that coming back from holiday is not easy,” he added. “Some players only started training two days ago, and personally I only began training last Monday. But it is an exceptional season.”

PSG will have little time to celebrate their European Super Cup success, with Doue already looking towards their next fixture against Lens on Sunday. He described the campaign as a great one that had now properly begun and called on his team-mates to pursue another trophy.

“A great season has started now, and we have to aim to win the Champions Trophy on Sunday against Lens,” he said.

The forward also made clear that Paris Saint-Germain’s ambitions extend beyond domestic honours. The club are targeting a third successive Champions League title, and Doue said the squad were not prepared to limit their objectives after their latest European success.

“A third star? Of course we are thinking about it because we have the ambition, and our goal is to win everything this year,” he said.

Doue’s contribution against Aston Villa provided the latest evidence of his growing importance to PSG. His winning strike delivered the club another European trophy and ensured that their first major challenge of the new season ended with silverware.

However, the 2-1 success has done little to reduce the team’s appetite. For Doue, the European Super Cup is not the conclusion of last season’s achievements but the first step towards another campaign in which Paris Saint-Germain intend to compete for every available honour.
