Al Ahly bring midfielder Akram Tawfik back as fifth summer signing

Al Ahly have re-signed midfielder Akram Tawfik on a free transfer, bringing him back to the club just one year after his departure.

The Egyptian club announced on Wednesday evening that Tawfik had agreed a three-year contract during the current summer transfer window. His return reflects the coaching staff’s continued belief in experienced players who can make a difference in important matches.

Tawfik left Al Ahly for Qatar Stars League side Al Shamal in the summer of 2025. However, after spending only one season with the Qatari club, he ended his contract by mutual consent and has now chosen to return to the club where he previously played.

Al Ahly confirmed that all financial and administrative procedures relating to the transfer had been completed. The arrangements were finalised by Essam Serag El Din, the club’s head of contracts, in full co-ordination with football director Wael Gomaa.

The move makes Tawfik the fifth arrival at Al Ahly during the current transfer window. He follows Ali Mahmoud, Aqtay Abdullah, Sofiane Ben Jedida and Moncef Bekrar in joining the Egyptian club ahead of the 2026-27 season.

His return also marks the restoration of a relationship that ended only last summer. Al Ahly have reopened the door to one of their committed former players after his brief spell outside Egypt, securing his services without a transfer fee and tying him to the club for the next three seasons.

The club are currently preparing for the new campaign at a training camp in Spain. The camp is being held behind closed doors and will include a high-profile fixture against Barcelona in the Joan Gamper Trophy.

That match is scheduled to take place on 19 August. It will form part of Al Ahly’s preparations for the 2026-27 season as the club continue to assemble their squad and add to their summer recruitment.

Tawfik’s return therefore gives Al Ahly another midfield option before the new campaign begins, while completing a deal that brings one of the club’s former players back after just one season away.
