Brahim Diaz fires Real Madrid to victory over Deportivo in pre-season friendly
Morocco international Brahim Diaz scored the only goal as Real Madrid defeated Deportivo La Coruña 1-0 in a pre-season friendly at the Abanca Riazor Stadium on Wednesday.
Diaz struck in first-half stoppage time to settle an entertaining contest and give Real Madrid another positive result as they continue preparations for the new season.
Diaz punishes Deportivo on the counter
Real Madrid survived an early spell of pressure from the home side before gradually taking control of the contest.
The decisive moment came in the 45+1st minute when goalkeeper Andriy Lunin reacted quickly to a dangerous Deportivo corner and launched a long ball towards Diaz.
The Morocco international collected the pass around the halfway line before driving towards the Deportivo penalty area with defenders chasing him.
Diaz kept his composure to finish the counter-attack and put Real Madrid ahead, before celebrating in his trademark style.
Madrid dominate after the break
Real Madrid controlled much of the match through possession and quick passing as they searched for a second goal.
The Spanish giants came close on several occasions, but Deportivo goalkeeper Leo Roman produced important saves to keep his side in the contest.
Indric was denied by Roman after a dangerous attempt, while Real Madrid also had a second goal ruled out for offside.
Carlos Espi had found the net following a well-timed pass from Eduardo Camavinga, but the effort was disallowed.
Deportivo threaten late
Deportivo increased the pressure after making several substitutions, with David Milla and Mario Soriano causing problems for the Real Madrid defence.
The home side enjoyed more possession towards the end of the game and pushed for an equaliser.
They came close to finding one, but a timely intervention from Dumfries prevented a dangerous effort from a promising position.
Real Madrid held on to secure the victory and continue their preparations for the new campaign.
For Morocco, Diaz’s decisive contribution will provide another positive moment as the midfielder continues to establish himself as an important attacking option for both club and country.
